What is a VPN?

A VPN, short for virtual private network, is a service that encrypts all of your internet traffic by routes it through a VPN server, and hides your details from the websites you visit. Most prominently, this prevents your internet service provider from knowing what websites you visit or what files you’re downloading, as well as keeping you virtually anonymous online.

No, free VPNs are not safe. When it comes to most things that are free, you are not the customer – you’re the product.

It’s important to emphasize the importance of going for a paid VPN rather than free services. You should be wondering how these providers, that promise lifetime free VPN services, are earning money. According to a CSIRO study, most of these free VPNs (a scary 75% of them) log your usage and personal data. These providers can sell these details to data brokers and advertisers.  Moreover, based on tests on 283 free VPN providers, the study found out the following:

  • 38% contain malware.
  • 19% lack encryption which leads to traffic leaks, despite the promise to use encrypted tunneling.
  • 84% do not tunnel IPv6 traffic, and 66% do not tunnel DNS traffic.
  • 16% use non-transparent proxies to manipulate traffic.

These statistics are quite alarming. That’s why we strongly advise using a paid VPN, which will put you “the customer” first, to avoid becoming the product that the “free VPN” sells to companies.
